Hi, and welcome to our fundraiser for La Fundación Funtravidi in Bogotá, Colombia. This foundation is a community organisation, set up in 2006 by Profe. Luz Dary Velandia, that caters to the needs of El Codito neighbourhood in Bogotá.
The community here numbers 35,000 people, many of whom live in poverty and settled here due to displacement from rural areas or neighbouring Venezuela.
Funtravidi provides invaluable services to some 800 of the most vulnerable residents in this community.
- It runs educational programmes that provide tutelage to school-age children who have obtained places in local schools and acts as a refuge for children from unstable home backgrounds.
- It provides services to elderly people from the community, allowing them to engage in games and activities that increase their social contact.
- There are programmes for pregnant mothers that allow them to meet together and discuss their experiences of pregnancy.
- The organisation is crucial in signposting community members towards the healthcare services they need, especially those members of the community with disabilities or chronic illnesses.
These services are especially important to the ever-growing number of displaced persons coming to Bogotá from rural areas and neighbouring Venezuela.
Funtravidi operates from a former council building in El Codito. This building was vacated due to concerns of it being burried by a potential landslide occuring on the adjacent hillside. This is how it became available for Funtravidi to use. Renovations and repairs to this building are made at the expense of Funtravidi, which further deplete the little funds the foundation has.
We are petitioning for £71,000 in funds to allow Funtravidi to purchase a new premisis in a safer location, which will allow Luz Dary Velandia to continue to provide the services of Funtravidi in a much safer location. The new premises would be close to the current building to ensure that the same community is still being served.
