Help my mom L. Ann Kinyon get to the Taos Toolbox workshop!
Donation protected
Hi! I'm sci fi and fantasy writer T. K. Rex, and I'm fundraising for my mom (and sometimes co-author), L. Ann Kinyon, to attend the Taos Toolbox writers workshop this summer! I'm so excited she got in, but neither of us has an income right now so we need a little extra help to cover her tuition. The workshop has already awarded her a scholarship for half of it, which is awesome, and we probably have transportation covered. Anything you can contribute will help get her the rest of the way!
About L. Ann Kinyon
L. Ann Kinyon—Lezlie to her friends—is an independent scholar, poet, and editor of both Coreopsis Journal of Myth & Theatre and their sister publication, Roses & Wildflowers Magazine of Mythopoetic Fiction. You can find her work in Strange Horizons, New Edge Sword & Sorcery, Seasons Unceasing and elsewhere. She lives in Berkeley, California, and has been a member of the West Coast science fiction and fantasy community since before I was born. Our co-authored stories take place in a shared secondary fantasy world inspired by our mutual love of the West Coast and passion for the environmental challenges our region has confronted since the onset of colonialism. She can be found on Instagram and Twitter as @lezliethepoet, and her projects and publications are on her linktree.
Lezlie is a huge part of the reason I'm both an environmentalist and a writer. Her writing has a lyrical, beautifully descriptive voice and her stories, to me, often feel like exploring a mythical landscape, wondering what's just past that hill, through the misty oak trees, where mysterious creatures graze. I truly cannot wait to see where her craft takes her after a workshop like Taos.
About the Taos Toolbox writers workshop
Taos Toolbox is a two-week master class for science fiction and fantasy writers, helmed by veteran authors Walter John Williams and Nancy Kress. It's been running for about two decades, and this is the last year they're doing it, which means it's the last chance for my mom to go, and she's been hoping to get in for years.
More details from Walter's website:
"This year’s workshop will take place June 2-15, 2024, in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Special Guest for 2024 is the creator of The Expanse, James S.A. Corey, in reality the writing team of Daniel Abraham and Ty Frank.
Daniel and Ty are screenplay writers and television producers in addition to writing the bestselling Expanse series, so they should have a lot to share with us.
Special lecturers this year include Jeffe Kennedy, who currently holds the office of President of the Science Fiction Writers of America. She’s been widely published and has special expertise in indiepub, and owns her own press.
Our second special lecturer is Diana Rowland, who at various times been an Air Force pilot, a Las Vegas card dealer, a detective for a sheriff’s office in Louisiana, and a morgue assistant, occupations that contributed to writing her Demon and White Trash Zombie series. Expect her talk to be, umm, just a little bit forensic."
George R. R. Martin is also a supporter of the workshop, and has been known to make an appearance! (My mom is a HUGE fan, I hope she gets to meet him!)
