Hello, I would like you all to meet Kyra. She came to Greg’s family at four weeks old. They fed her from a bottle, taught her to eat solids and nurtured her into a funny energetic Boxer. During this time Greg had multiple seizures a day, unable to work and homebound because he could not drive and having a seizure in a store was traumatic for him and those around him. This is relevant because at 6 months old she started to act what we jokingly called “broken” but all the behaviors were to let Greg know he was going to have a seizure. She will lay on top of Greg to prevent him from standing. She will ram Nikki (Greg’s wife) with her nose to alert her to his seizure. She will get help if he has an episode. She will herd him to a chair or to the bed. After she alerts someone, he has about an hour to get to safety or call for help. She gave Greg a new life. He could leave the house, he could even get a job, knowing she would alert him so he could get somewhere safe. She is a blessing to us and has worked at keeping Greg safe for the last 8 and a half years.
Maybe you have seen her around town, at the Zoo, the mall, Chuze or the grocery store, with her boots or shoes on to protect her feet. Maybe you have seen her at Roadhouse over the last 4+ years, or in the Axe Room at the new Roadies. She has become an unofficial mascot to the wonderful people she works with there.
We need your help; in November she was diagnosed with cancer in her back leg and abdomen. It is inoperable and there are only a few options for care. She needs to see an oncologist, who may only be able to give her palliative care. We may only be able to make her comfortable. To make things more complicated she has severe arthritis in the back leg that does not have cancer. We are reaching out for assistance in giving her back a fraction of what she has given to all who know her.
