Help Kylan Fight Brain Cancer...GBM

Since 2015, Kylan Bautista has had to look adversity straight in the eye and learn to overcome the unthinkable. As a senior in high school, it wasn’t the stress of passing final exams, picking where to go to college, or even just who to take to prom that Kylan had to think about (like most of us). Rather, the adversity Kylan had to face was a matter of life or death, as he discovered at the age of 17 that he had a brain tumor, changing his life completely.

Kylan -- a very gifted athlete who played basketball, baseball, and football on his high school’s teams -- had his first seizure at baseball practice, an event that would truly change his life forever. When I’ve heard people describe this day to me, the main word that comes to mind is “scary.” Frankly, the word scary barely scratches the surface of the thoughts that were going through the witnesses’ minds. A kid who everyone knew as a jokester, an amazing individual, and every girl’s crush was lying on the floor seizing at home plate. His family later took him to the hospital, where a CT and MRI were completed, and, right there and then, the brain mass in Kylan’s head was clear as day. Following protocol, a brain biopsy took place on February 3, 2015, and the mass was officially diagnosed as a cancerous brain tumor. A month later, Kylan underwent his first craniotomy, with the tumor being removed. Later that year, Kylan recovered and walked at graduation with his class, and he was also able to attend grad night at Disneyland. Kylan being able to have the strength and will power to attend these events was nothing short of incredible.

During the follow up MRI in late 2015, there were signs that not the entire tumor had been removed, and that it had spread throughout his brain. Over the next 6 months, Kylan had to go through radiation and chemotherapy in yet more attempts to get rid of the rest of the tumor. After these treatments, we knew Kylan was still battling, but he was doing great really all the way through 2017. Kylan seemed like himself. He could go out with friends, play basketball at the park regularly, and otherwise engage in normal life. With very few seizures happening at all, we were looking forward to Kylan even being able to drive soon. But as Kylan knows far too well, you can be looking and feeling great, but that does not necessarily mean everything is going right.

In April 2018, another tumor was found, and it was clear that the cancer had found its way back in Kylan with even more force than before. On April 27th, Kylan had to undergo his 2nd craniotomy at 20 years old. Again, after checking out of the hospital, Kylan began his recovery again with even more chemotherapy and radiation. Unfortunately, another brain tumor was found on June 18th, and on June 19th, Kylan underwent his 3rd craniotomy.

With the surgeries and treatments continuing to line up, the medical bills and expenses have become overwhelming for Kylan’s family, and I want to personally ask members of the community for assistance. Anyone who can donate any amount of money is greatly appreciated. Please help us fight, and more importantly help Kylan continue to fight, because he won’t give up.
