For those of you who know me, I'm so excited for my recovery! For those of you who don't, I'll give you the quick version of my eleven year long health journey.
When I was nine, both of my kidneys failed due to complications from strep throat. I was immediately air lifted from Ithaca to Golisano Children's Hospital in Rochester NY. I ended up staying for around two months while the reality of my kindey-less life set in. Over the past eleven (nearly twelve!) years there have been many surgeries, medications, side effects, and limitations on my life. My kidney failure has made steady income hard for me to come by, and several jobs have let me go because of my health and scheduling needs. It has not been easy, but I’m extremely grateful for the life I’ve built during this experience.
This february, I got the call everyone in my position dreams about, and was immediately rushed to Upstate Medical University in Syracuse to receive a donor kidney. It was a 10/10 match, and the transplant went perfectly! Now I’m on the road to recovery and getting healthier every day.
So what the kidney means for me now, is three months of rest, regaining strength, and nourishing my new healthy body while on a regimen of immunosuppressant drugs. Unfortunately this does leave me in a difficult place financially while I’m unable to work, so I'm asking for your help. Without it, I risk losing my apartment and my access to the nutrients, medical care, and rest that I need — so that’s what this fundraiser is for. This is hopefully the last time I'll ever have to do this — I plan on taking this kidney a long way.
