First of all, thank you for clicking on our GoFundMe and wanting to learn more about Kumo.
Kumo is our six month old kitten that is so incredible cuddly, curious, vocal, but most of all, strong. He is the youngest of our three pets, but certainly has the most spunk and personality. We adopted him in mid-July and are so happy to have another fur baby running around.
Sadly, he is currently hospitalized and under the care of the best medical team we could ask for. On 9/29/25, we took him to see a cardiologist to address a heart murmur that our vet had concerns about. The echocardiogram showed that his heart was actually fine, but the ultrasound and x-rays presented a concerning sight in his chest and abdomen. Our primary vet recommended that we take him to the ER immediately so they can do a CT scan and run additional tests. We took him to the ER on the same day, and they discovered fluid in his right lung and recommended open chest surgery to get it drained immediately and get a better look at the state of his lungs.
His incredible medical team performed surgery on him on 10/2/25 and it went well, so he just needed to be hospitalized for 2-3 nights to ensure no post-op complications and that he would be ready to go home on Sunday or Monday.
This morning, 10/3/25, Kumo’s medical team informed me that he did well throughout the night. However, his condition as of this morning is concerning for his medical team and they’ve recommended to transfer him to their urgent care unit for closer monitoring and supervision. Currently, his blood pressure is low and they are finding more fluid from his chest tube than they would like, but they are doing everything they can to help improve his condition and recovery.
Although we are lucky enough to have pet insurance that will cover up to $10k in a single period, with a $250 deductible and 80% reimbursement, the estimated costs have gone way outside of what were expecting to pay. So far, we’ve put down over $15k to go towards his imaging, open chest surgery, post-op care, hospitalization, etc. Depending on how he does over the next 1-2 days, he may need additional care, such as extended hospitalization, or an oxygen cage, which will continue to drive up our estimates. In addition to what we’ve paid, our current estimates from the hospital are at over $10k and can change depending on what is needed for the remainder of his hospitalization. We expect to hit the allowed maximum with his pet insurance, so any additional charges will be out-of-pocket. Ultimately, we want Kumo to receive the best care that he needs to recover from this major procedure, but we are asking for your donations to help make this more financially manageable.
We greatly appreciate any help that can be provided, either through donations or simply sharing Kumo’s story. All funds raised will go towards his medical bills and any future medical expenses to ensure that Kumo can live a healthy and comfortable life. Thank you for taking the time to learn about our brave little Kumo, we hope that he remains strong during this critical time and ask that you keep him in your thoughts.
With love,
Michelle and Kevin
