I want to share the story of my beloved partner, Krisztián Mursa. He is only 36 years old, a loving husband, and the proud father of two daughters. He is also my first love, we have been together for 20 years, building a life full of dreams, love, and family.
The tragedy that changed everything:
On June 10, 2023, while building our family home in Budapest, Krisztián suffered a terrible accident. The ground collapsed on him while digging, causing severe anoxia (lack of oxygen). His heart stopped. Miraculously, paramedics were able to resuscitate him, but the damage was immense. He spent days on life support, fighting for his life. Against all odds, he began breathing on his own again after 6 days. After 3 long months in the hospital, we were told the devastating news: because of the lack of oxygen, Krisztián had suffered severe brain damage and fell into a wakeful coma.
Our fight for hope:
Doctors in Hungary said there was nothing more they could do. But giving up was never an option for us. After endless searching, we found a specialized clinic in Antwerp, Belgium, where a dedicated team offers advanced therapies for brain injury patients, including robotic rehabilitation and brain stimulation treatments.
We sold our home, took loans, and with the help of family and friends, we managed to cover the costs of 3 months of treatment. In August 2024, Krisztián began therapy and we witnessed small miracles. We saw signs of progress, hope, and a chance that one day, he may come back to us.
Other families at the clinic told us their journeys: recovery takes years, not months. And so, we made the hardest but most important decision of our lives: we left everything behind in Hungary to stay in Belgium for Krisztián’s chance at recovery.
Our daily reality:
- Krisztián’s 62-year-old mother has not left his side for 2 years. She sleeps on a chair or couch next to him, waking every hour or two at night to help with oxygen masks or prevent him from choking.
- I, Rozalia, am not only Krisztián’s wife but also his caregiver and provider, working several jobs while raising our daughters.
- Our 10-year-old little girl and our 19-year-old daughter, who recently joined us in Belgium, both dream of having their father back.
For 2 years, our only prayer has been: that Krisztián wakes up. With every therapy session, this dream feels a little closer. But the costs are overwhelming.
- One robotic therapy session costs €550, and Krisztián needs many of them.
- One brain stimulation therapy costs nearly €4,000.
