We just received some very devastating news. Kristy's cancer has relapsed, she has just been diagnosed with stage 4 Carcinosarcoma.
Full story below.
On April 21, 2020, Kristy completed nine months of aggressive treatments for a rare and aggressive form of cervical cancer called Carcinosarcoma. At that point in time, her CT scans showed "no evidence of disease," and she was scheduled for follow-up scans every six months there after. So far, she has had a total of 4 follow-up scans since completing treatment, all of which came back clear, including her most recent scan on December 8, 2021.
A few days after that last scan she began to experience severe pain in her abdomen. On December 17, 2021, she decided to go to the ER due to the pain level, hoping it was a minor issue. They gave her another CT scan and discovered a 6cm mass (about the size of an egg) in her abdomen. We brought the report to her oncologist at Moffit Cancer Center, who scheduled her for a biopsy that confirmed our worst fears. The mass is stage 4 metastatic Carcinosarcoma. This type of cancer is rare (fewer than 1,000 cases per year) and aggressive. Basically, it's two cancers combined into one tumor, both carcinoma and sarcoma.
What's most frustrating is that when they reviewed her previous scans, they discovered the mass had been visible as far back as June 2021 at 1cm and even in her most recent follow-up scan days before the ER's discovery at 4cm. In other words, they missed it! This "oversight" delayed treatment by six months, likely resulting in a more aggressive treatment protocol and increasing the likelihood of it spreading.
As you can imagine, we are stunned by this news! We are still recovering physically, emotionally, and financially from the first battle, and now we've got to go through it all over again.
We learned from the first go-round that there are many more costs, besides the obvious medical expenses, that we did not anticipate. Things such as travel, feeding our family, lost income, vehicle maintenance, etc. So we launched a new Go Fund Me to help ease the burden and allow the community to show her their support. ( More tax-deductible ways to donate here: https://pastorrobreacts.com/DONATE/ )
Thank you all for the love and support you've shown our family throughout her battle these last few years. Ultimately we are trusting God for all things and praying for her complete recovery. Please pray with us.
