Hi everyone!
As many of you know, becoming a veterinarian has always been a dream of mine. While I was not able to gain admission to the one Canadian school I could apply to, I was accepted into the Royal Veterinary College in the UK. I considered myself extremely lucky to have made it that far. My first year of vet school was two years combined into one, and after arriving three weeks after term started because of a delayed VISA, I worked hard throughout the year and finished with Distinction.
While I was fortunate to receive some student loans from the Canadian/Manitoban governments, unfortunately, this wasn't enough to cover the cost of everything and I had to leave vet school a bit ago. International tuition was increasing and my student loans wouldn’t keep up with it.
To give perspective, international tuition for 2025/2026 is approximately £47,000 - which is a stark increase from my first year of university and significantly higher than domestic tuition (which is around £9,000 per year).
There is a silver lining that if I can get the funds I can return back, but in this economy it feels impossible. I’m still pursuing every avenue and will be applying for student loans again (but even those are incredibly limited). My heart is broken knowing I can’t achieve this dream anymore, graduate with my friends, or spend my life saving animals.
It feels like a great tragedy - to chase after a dream and fail at it, just because of money. As a person who has no interest in wealth/opulence, it’s frustrating that the dividing line between me and becoming a doctor was purely money. I worked hard as a student, achieving distinction in some of my exams.
I gave my entire life aiming to become a veterinarian, but, fell short in my dreams.
