We (my daughter Kelli and I) are setting up this fundraiser for the care and additional expenses that will come up for my sister Kristi Haroldson.
Kristi has been diagnosed with bladder cancer – Small Cell Carcinoma of the bladder, which is extremely rare and aggressive; Small Cell Carcinoma usually attacks the lungs (Kristi's is only in her bladder) so the doctors do not know which route, or combination of treatments will be done for her bladder. She will start chemotherapy this week, and radiation can be added/considered as well as bladder removal.
Small Cell Carcinoma is also a cancer that likes to spread, so no matter the treatment she chooses, it will be a long and stressful path. Testing and scans will be done intermittently to check her progress. Genetic testing will hopefully be approved by her insurance company and will be done as well. It will be a tough road ahead for Kristi and we will all be there to support her in all of the ways possible.
This diagnosis comes after what has already been a difficult and challenging health journey. Prior to the diagnosis of cancer, Kristi was hospitalized and diagnosed with Hashimoto's thyroiditis, Diplopia thyroiditis and Graves' orbitopathy which she is still being treated for and is yet another rare diagnosis.
Kristi is a wonderful mom of a beautiful autistic daughter, Bethany. The bond between them is beautiful to watch. Bethany is right there for Kristi, wanting to ride along to the doctor appointments or tests that Kelli takes Kristi for. Bethany says this is for “moral support”, I believe for both of them.
Although Bethany seems to be handling this news well, it's definitely taking a toll on her. She worries about her Mom, and doesn't quite fully understand what is going on. We have tried explain to her as best we can, but the worry can be seen on her face when the appointments come that she can't ride along on or she knows she is having tests, but not knowing what they are for.
Thankfully, Covid19 has not disrupted her treatment schedule.
Kristi’s strength and faith throughout all of this has been amazing. This Go Fund Me campaign will be used for expenses related to Kristi’s care- including medical bills, transportation ( 1hour long drive to treatments and appointments), and other necessities that are not covered by her insurance.
Kristi is no longer working at this time, but will surely kick this cancer out of here, and be back even stronger!
