A Life Turned Upside Down by Betrayal

Hi, my name is Michella, and I’m raising funds for my sister Krista—a strong, intelligent, and accomplished woman living with Muscular Dystrophy—who is now facing the unthinkable.
After over a decade of being financially and emotionally abused by someone she trusted, Krista is about to lose her home, her stability, and everything she’s worked so hard for. This is her story—and why I’m asking for your help.

Meet Krista
Krista was born with Muscular Dystrophy and has used a wheelchair her entire life. But if you know her, you know she’s never let that define her. She’s brilliant, driven, and has built an impressive career, becoming an expert in disability rights and advocacy, even working in a DEI role at Starbucks.
Because of her disability, Krista has always relied on caregivers for basic daily needs—getting out of bed, showering, dressing. Over the years, some of these caregivers have let her down. But one, in particular, took everything.

How It All Fell Apart
More than ten years ago, Krista hired a caregiver who seemed kind, dependable, and trustworthy. She offered to move in—along with her husband—to help provide more consistent care. Krista, grateful for the help, agreed. They lived rent-free in her home while the caregiver slowly became a trusted friend.

Then came the betrayal.

When Krista ran into financial challenges, this caregiver offered to “help,” convincing Krista to sign over financial power of attorney. From there, she took complete control of Krista’s finances—claiming to be managing debt, paying bills, and helping Krista stay afloat.
Instead, she was stealing.
She stopped paying the mortgage, HOA, medical bills, and utilities—even though Krista was giving her the money to do so.
She changed all account contact information to her own, so Krista never received any notices.
She took out loans, bought cars, and even purchased a house—all using Krista’s income.
She stole valuable jewelry, electronics, and other belongings from the home.
Now, Krista is facing foreclosure. She owes thousands in back utilities mortgage, etc... Her retirement savings are gone, and despite tirelessly looking for work, it has been nearly impossible—especially as someone with a disability in today’s job market.

Time is Running Out
Even with police reports filed, the banks and utility companies won’t extend deadlines any longer. The woman who did this had already lied and made fake payment plans on Krista’s behalf—so they’ve lost patience.
Krista will lose her home by the end of this month unless we can raise enough funds to stop it.
She’s too ashamed to ask for help herself—but I refuse to let her go through this alone.

How You Can Help
We are raising funds to:
  • Pay off the immediate utility and mortgage debts to stop the foreclosure
  • Cover legal expenses to hold the caregiver accountable
  • Help Krista recover financially while she searches for stable employment
  • Assist in replacing stolen belongings and essential care items

Any amount—big or small—makes a difference. And if you can’t give financially, please consider sharing this page to help us reach more people.

Krista Deserves So Much Better
This is someone who has dedicated her life to helping others. She’s spent her career fighting for the rights of people with disabilities, advocating for inclusion and equality. And now, she’s the one who needs help.
Please stand with Krista. Help us save her home, her dignity, and her future.

Thank you for reading, for caring, and for any support you can offer.
With love,
Michella
Krista’s sister
