A few weeks ago, we thought we were dealing with a stomach issue.
Today, Koki underwent major surgery to remove a mass that had grown so large it was obstructing her gastrointestinal tract and preventing food from passing normally.
Koki is our beloved cat, best friend, and family member. She has brought endless joy, comfort, and love into our lives, and we are doing everything we can to give her the chance to keep fighting.
Koki has already overcome incredible odds once in her life. As a kitten, she was diagnosed with Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP), a disease that was once considered almost universally fatal. Through treatment, determination, and a lot of support, she beat it and went on to live a happy, healthy life.
Over the past several weeks, however, Koki's health began to rapidly decline. What started as digestive issues led to emergency veterinary visits, specialist consultations, advanced imaging, hospitalization, biopsies, feeding tube procedures, and ultimately surgery. Recent scans revealed a large mass that had nearly engulfed part of her gastrointestinal tract, leaving us with difficult decisions and little time to make them.
Today, Koki went into surgery in hopes of removing the mass and giving her the best possible chance at recovery. While the surgery was a necessary step, we still face many unanswered questions. We are currently awaiting pathology results to determine the exact cause of the masses. One possibility being investigated is whether this could be related to a relapse or complication connected to her previous battle with FIP, though we do not yet have definitive answers.
What we do know is that Koki has a long road ahead. Between surgery, hospitalization, medications, specialist care, diagnostics, and ongoing treatment, the costs have become overwhelming.
While we are incredibly grateful to have pet insurance, the reality is that insurance has not eliminated the financial burden of Koki's care. Between deductibles, co-insurance, uncovered expenses, upfront payments, and ongoing treatment costs, we are still facing a significant financial responsibility.
To date, Koki's medical care has exceeded $50,000. While insurance has helped cover a substantial portion of those expenses, we remain responsible for thousands of dollars in out-of-pocket costs, with additional diagnostics, medications, specialist care, and recovery expenses still ahead of us.
Asking for help is not something that comes naturally to us, but the reality is that Koki's treatment has reached a point where we cannot shoulder the financial burden alone.
If you are able to contribute, every donation will go directly toward Koki's medical care, surgery, hospitalization, medications, specialist consultations, diagnostics, and recovery. If donating isn't possible, sharing her story would mean the world to us.
Koki has beaten the odds before, and we're hoping she can do it again.
Thank you for taking the time to read her story and for supporting her through the biggest fight of her life. We will continue to share updates as we learn more about her condition and recovery.
With love and gratitude,
