My sister Kodi is currently living with my parents and grandmother. Recently, my parents bought a new house big enough for all of them, so Kodi could help care for our grandmother. On February 3, as everyone was moving in, a terrible accident happened. My dad was backing up the U-Haul to the front deck and asked Kodi to guide the ramp onto the stairs. In a split second, Kodi lost her balance and fell, and the ramp smashed into her leg, pinning her between the ramp and the deck. The pain was immediate and intense. My parents and neighbors rushed to help and called 911, fearing her leg was broken. Paramedics arrived quickly, but on the way to the hospital, Kodi went into shock and her blood pressure dropped dangerously low. Life Flight was called, and she was rushed to the hospital, where doctors stabilized her and managed her pain. After a week of tests, we learned her leg wasn't broken, but the accident had pushed the bones in her lower leg up behind her knee, nearly into her femur, and tore many muscles, tendons, and ligaments. The trauma caused her thigh to swell to more than double its normal size and turn black. Kodi has already undergone two surgeries to remove dead tissue and over two gallons of fluid. Her wound is still open and must heal from the inside out. She will likely need skin grafts and knee surgery to repair the damage. Her leg now has a wound the size of a shark bite—about 8 by 4 inches. Kodi has been in the hospital for over three weeks, unable to work or care for herself. The medical bills are piling up, and even with insurance, the costs will be overwhelming. She may lose her car, her only way to get to work when she recovers. Kodi is a hardworking, caring person who loves her job and the residents she cares for. Not being able to work is breaking her heart, and she feels like she's letting people down. She would never ask for help herself, so I'm asking for her. Our family is trying to stay positive and figure things out while she heals, but we are scared about the future. Please, if you can, help my sister through this difficult time. Your support will help cover her medical bills, living expenses, transportation, and help her keep her car so she can return to work when she's able. Thank you for any help you can give.
