On Tuesday, July 9th, our dog Koda had a terrible accident. He headed out our back door and took off to chase a squirrel. He misjudged a jump onto a small retaining wall and ended up crashing into it head first at full speed. At first, it just looked like some broken teeth which would have been bad enough, but he wasn't moving his legs on the drive to the vet.
The first place we took him did a great job. They removed 6 broken teeth and amputated the parts of his jaw that had broken off. They stitched him back up and his mouth looks pretty much normal minus a few teeth. The next day, we took him to Redwood City for further evaluation. After an MRI, they found he had a herniated disk that did not need surgery. It had bruised his spinal cord which was causing his paralysis. This was good news.
He is expected to be able to walk again in the next few months. It's going to be a slow recovery full of physical therapy and constant supervision to make sure he doesn’t overdo it.
