TW: Details of graphic dog attack and animal abuse.
Hi! My name is Kylie and I'm organizing this fundraiser for one of my furriest neighbors- Kobe! Kobe is a delightful standard poodle who lives with an amazing family down the street from me in Durham, near the American Village area.
On Sunday, May 25th, Kobe was violently attacked by a dog in his complex that has hurt him before. The attack was horrifying and happened in front of OUR neighbor and her young kids. The dog was outside without it's owners, not on a leash. The owners let the dog outside and were did not know to come help until they heard screaming. The dog grabbed onto Kobe's chest and tore his skin off and it took 3 adults over 15 minutes to pull the dog off of Kobe. The owners then proceeded to violently punish their dog for *his* "mistake".
Kobe immediately needed emergency surgery to save his life and a police report was filed. Thankfully, the surgery went okay, but the wound is so large that more surgery will probably be needed and it's precarious every hour right now.
Our neighbor desperately needs support. Her newborn was born in April and supporting a baby, three young kids, and a gravely ill dog (while being traumatized and grieving) is too much for one person alone.
Other neighbors are signing up for shifts to support Kobe- making sure he stays fed, hydrated, takes his meds, and watching for signs of infection. So many people have offered their time to help Kobe and his family heal. WE LOVE OUR DURHAM NEIGHBORS (and Bull City Shares!!).
We're figuring out a lot right now- there's so much behind the scenes with trying to make sure the attacking dog doesn't do this again and the owners do the right/legal thing. But as we work on holding the owners responsibile, the emergency vet bill including surgery, visits, meds, and supplies is outrageous. Our friend's used what they could (June rent money) to get surgery for Kobe and desperately need help with the bills that occurred from this attack.
Anything you can give will be directly donated to the family, being kept anonymous here, but can be vouched for by me (Kylie Foley) and Abbey Willis and I will report proof of when the money is successfully shared with our friend.
A HUGE thank you to those that jumped into action on Sunday, we were able to donate $460 to Kobe's initial bill!! Let's keep it going for Kobe and his family.
The total was calculated based on what was spent so far and what the vet anticipates the next week will bring to keep Kobe okay.
