Koa is our 4 year old curious and attentive shih-poo. He loves being around people, not leaving our side and getting involved in everything we’re doing. He loves his belly rubs and cuddles as well as exploring outdoors.
Without any warning, Koa suddenly couldn’t stand. His back legs gave way, and within hours he had lost the ability to walk completely and was in immense pain.
He was later diagnosed with Grade 5 Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) where it is common in small dog breeds, a serious spinal condition that can cause sudden paralysis. We’ve been informed that he remains at risk of developing to Myelomalacia, a serious complication where the spinal cord can progressively deteriorate causing death. We were told Koa’s condition is extremely serious as he is at the highest risk category for IVDD. He remains paralysed and unable to urinate on his own requiring medical assistance.
Koa has now undergone urgent spinal surgery and remains in hospital receiving intensive care. The vets have explained that it was a 50/50 situation, there was a chance that surgery could help him walk again, but still remains a real risk it might not. We were faced with a decision to let him go, or go ahead with the surgery and give him that chance.
We’re sharing Koa’s story not only to ask for help, but also to raise awareness of IVDD. In Koa’s case, there was no signs at all; he went from being an energetic boy to suddenly unable to walk. It’s been devastating to learn how quickly this condition can appear and how severe it can become without any prior indication.
So far, the vets have seen slow progress but are hopeful, his recovery will take time with ongoing rehabilitation and treatment. Any funds raised will go directly towards Koa’s ongoing treatment and recovery. This covers his emergency surgery, hospital care, medication, and the rehabilitation; including physiotherapy/hydrotherapy he will need as he continues to fight to regain movement in his back legs.
Thank you so much to everyone who has taken the time to read Koa’s story, donate, or share his page. Your kindness and support mean more than we can put into words. Every bit of help is giving Koa a real chance at recovery and a second chance to walk again.
