Help Klaus Recover from Severe Injuries

Hi everyone,

On May 25th, 2025, my cat Klaus took a devastating fall while sleeping. He broke his left humerus and has ulcers in his right eye. I had to rush him to the emergency room Sunday night and was sent home the next day with Klaus in a poorly done cast and improper pain medication. I was told to wait until Tuesday for a surgical consult because of the Memorial Day holiday.

I spent hours trying to help my baby calm down and manage his pain. He was showing multiple signs of stress and pain. I ended up back at the ER, this time at the specialty hospital VERG in Gowanus. It was there where I learned the severity of his injury. I was told this injury is only really seen in cats that get run over by cars. I was also told to be prepared in the case of amputation.

In the end, Klaus spent 4 nights surrounded by doctors. He underwent surgery to implant a metal plate and screws in his arm. Klaus is now at home, but it’s a long journey to recovery. He is crate restricted for the next 2 months. I, like many pet owners, did not have pet insurance. Anyone who knows Klaus knows that he is full of life. Animals can live a full life with three legs, but what kind of mom would I be to not try to save his leg?
