Help Give Klaus the Best Shot at a Long, Happy Life
Klaus is the kind of pup who leaves an impression on everyone he meets. With his big, goofy personality and derpy expressions, he’s not just a pet—he’s a beloved member of our family. If you’ve met him, you know he’s a source of joy for so many people!
A while ago, Klaus started limping and barely putting pressure on his back right paw—but he didn’t let it slow him down. He was still chasing squirrels, jumping for joy, and playfully tormenting the cat around the house! We assumed he had torn his ACL, so we took him to a specialist for X-rays. What we thought would be a straightforward injury turned into something far more serious: signs of bone cancer.
The diagnosis has come in waves over the past few weeks, with multiple rounds of X-rays, bloodwork, and a biopsy, followed by more imaging and an ultrasound. At first, even the oncologist wasn’t convinced it was cancer, since it wasn’t presenting in the usual way. We clung to that hope while we could, but unfortunately, the biopsy confirmed that Klaus does have cancer.
We still don’t know exactly what type it is, but we’ve begun preparing for treatment. The next step is to amputate the affected leg, followed by chemotherapy. After the surgery, they’ll analyze the bone further to determine the cancer type and best course of treatment. The good news is that his bloodwork, chest X-rays, and ultrasound showed no signs of the cancer having spread—giving us hope that surgery and chemo can give us more time with our sweet Klausey.
This experience has echoed Anna’s (Klaus' mom) own ovarian cancer journey three years ago in a way that’s hard to put into words. After months of testing, uncertainty, and waiting for answers, we didn’t get a diagnosis until after surgery—just like with Klaus. That painful, in-between time—the not knowing—was incredibly hard. Facing a similar process again, this time for Klaus, has brought back a lot of those feelings.
As you can imagine, this has been overwhelming and heartbreaking. The emotional toll has been immense—and so has the financial one. We’ve already spent thousands on diagnostics and know we have a long road (and many bills) ahead.
We aren’t usually the type to ask for help, but we know how much Klaus is loved. So many of you have asked what you can do—this is it. If you feel moved to contribute, your donation will help cover the cost of Klaus’s surgery, chemotherapy, and ongoing care. Every little bit helps—truly. Whether it’s $10, $100, or simply sharing this page, we’re deeply grateful.
Our goal is simple: to give Klaus the best possible chance at a long, comfortable life—filled with under-the-chin pets, treats, all the love he brings to those around him, and maybe even some family hikes again (with three legs this time).
Thank you for being part of his story and ours.
With love and gratitude,
The Baldi Family
