Kita was able to receive her first surgery but because there is a ½ inch of inflammation it was hard to get to the wound to clean and get rid of the necrotic tissue especially with being so close to the jugular. We are at the beginning of her recovery, her next surgery will be as soon as the inflammation/swelling goes down and there is more scar tissue. They weren't able to remove more necrotic tissue than they did because she started bleeding with how deep this injury goes. They are hoping to be more aggressive in the next surgery.
We are hoping for the best however the vet has warned to not get our hopes up. This is a HUGE injury and at the point of her going septic if not already. She has a shot that we can pull her through this and we are going to do everything possible to make that happen!
She requires several medications and her wound cleaned/flushed throughout the day.
Kita was found dumped with many other rabbits and a few litters. It appears she was mulled by a predator who tore a hole in the front of her neck causing flesh to be exposed. She has no skin left on the front of her neck up to her jawline, it's completely exposed. A botfly then buried a larvae in her neck where her wound is, this caused the tissue to turn necrotic along with the injury. With the dead tissue maggots were inside and covering the wound from one side of her neck to the other. There was also a tick found. With all these parasites she has 2 abscess pockets that have formed and are 3cm in diameter.
We need to start preparing for her next surgery so that we are ready. We are hoping it will be in a couple weeks, she gets rechecked in a week to see. If you're able to send a small donation Kita could use your help! With not being able to remove all the necrotic tissue or infection this will continue to get worse until we can go back in. We are hoping the medications, flushes throughout the day, etc will be able to keep everything at bay for her to make it to the next surgery.
The pictures of what her neck looks like under the bandage is too graphic for us to post here. If you'd like to see please check our surgery update post.
Her surgery will be $3000 and rechecks to get her there around $500.
