HELP KIRA & KAT THRIVE

Kira & Kat are partners in love & life for over 13 years, who are in need of our help raising $3,500. Both Kat and Kira are valued long time Oakland community members. Kat is a gifted writer, as well as an advocate for her students, friends, and family. Kira is a healer who has touched many of us with her creativity, vulnerability, passion, and truth. I am asking that as a community we rise together to support Kira & Kat so that they can continue their healing journey.

The reality is there is an epidemic of homelessness in Oakland being driven by gentrification. Landlords use any excuse they can to drive tenants out of their rent controlled apartments, especially black folks, so they can double or triple the rent. Kira & Kat were fortunate to have moved into their unit in August of 2012, right before rents started to spike in Oakland, but every time they've fallen behind their landlord has tried to evict them.

Kira is in the process of applying for permanent disability after an injury to her right hand that means she is only supposed to lift, push or pull three pounds, with no repetitive movements or grasping. This is on top of other chronic conditions that she's been dealing with for a very long time, the end result is that she can do short term workshops, but no longer has the stamina to hold full-time employment.

Kat has been underemployed or unemployed for almost two years and was recently laid off from the last part-time contract job she had. The great news is that she started a brand new full-time job on Monday, October 1, 2018; the hard part is that between September and October's rent they are $3,500.00 in the hole and it will take awhile for the first paycheck.

They are both so humbled to ask for your help to raise the remainder of September's rent: $1,500.00 and all of October's rent: $2,000 by October 15th, as they stabilize from this challenging time. Please do what you can to help them reach solid ground. Every little bit helps. If you can't afford to contribute please share with someone who can. Thank you so much for your generosity and your prayers, we are all so grateful.
