On 4/11, my dog Kimber was hit by a car and rushed to Windcrest Animal Hospital, where she stayed for 2 nights. Her right back leg was severely degloved, and her left back leg suffered superficial wounds. She needed stitches, heavy pain medication, and constant monitoring during her stay. After coming home, we were instructed to follow up with her primary vet every 3 days for bandage changes and to closely monitor her liver enzyme levels, which were extremely high from the trauma of being hit. Today, we found out that her right leg is now badly infected. We are facing either months of intensive wound care and treatment or the heartbreaking possibility of surgery to amputate her leg.

Kimber is not just a family dog—she is my best friend and my emotional support through some of the hardest times in my life. She has been by my side through all of my medical diagnoses and my worst days. She’s my cuddle buddy, my comfort, and the closest thing I have to a VA service dog. She somehow always knows when I’m pushing myself too hard, when I need to sit down, or when something is wrong. Even while she is in pain herself, she still tries to comfort me and tell me to slow down.

I recently moved into a new home, and the financial burden of emergency vet care, ongoing treatment, and the possibility of surgery is overwhelming. I never ask for help like this, but after seeing how much pain she is in, I know I have to do everything I can for her.
