Hey there! My name is Kimberlee, and I’m the creator of Eternal Balance Candles (EBC). I started EBC to call attention to the importance of mental health in a unique way and to push back on society’s ideology that you must be doing something productive at all times.

I was diagnosed with depression over 10 years ago — and it took me until recently to accept my struggle with depression and suicidal ideation. I wanted to avoid the stigma that came with being diagnosed with a mental illness and, because of that, I built a brand that gives permission to those who need it to pause.

The undue stress that comes from the idea that we must be doing something all the time can cause tension that affects us both mentally and physically. I know from personal experience that our bodies keep the score.

I value self-care, and I have a great opportunity to develop my online business into a brick-and-mortar retail space. This would give me the ability to expand my mission of being intentional with raising awareness about mental health through modern lux soy candles. I am looking for help from you while I work to secure funding with grants.

I have always said I want EBC to be on track to becoming a six-figure business, and this next step will help me achieve becoming a full-time entrepreneur... Where are your contributions going? I will be providing occasional updates with where funding is going specifically under these categories:

Startup retail cost

Initial inventory for first 3 months

Retail rent for first 2-6 months

Being able to have a retail space will give me the ability to expand within the Denver community, while also having more time to increase my target market to more states. My goal is to push my candles out to 3-5 shops for retail sale within the first two years. I am also looking forward to being able to put funds toward hiring my first part-time employee, which is exciting to imagine.

It’s important to note that EBC is a Black, woman-owned business. I know the importance of breathing fully and pausing to take care of ourselves. That is where the candles come in, and this is why I know expanding EBC will help continue that message and positively impact folks on a community level.

The truth is, there's nothing to be ashamed of — being diagnosed with depression does not mean we don't ever have good, great, or even amazing days. It does mean, however, that we should be treated with respect, care, patience, and understanding. We just move through the world differently, and that is okay.

Additionally, I see the power in dismantling the stigma that comes with being diagnosed with a mental illness because so many of us do have a mental illness. I know living an intentional life can help with that. The start is having a space you are comfortable in and having a space where you can escape the demands of life and just be. I see candles as a physical reminder of this.
