This week I lost my best friend, Jack. He was the sweetest soul — gentle, loving, and happy to give his attention to anyone, from kids to strangers to every cat he ever met. Jack was with me through everything — my divorce, my hardest days, and so many lonely times. He was my comfort, my companion, and my constant.

His health declined very quickly, and I rushed him to the vet multiple times. They did blood work, X-rays, an ultrasound, and everything they could to help him. In the end, I had to make the most painful decision of my life and let him go peacefully.

Now I’m facing the unexpected costs of all the tests, emergency care, euthanasia, and his cremation. I’m trying to grieve while also trying to find a way to cover everything.
