Hello, my name is DeAnna and I'm creating this GoFundMe for a very dear friend of mine, Kim Guyer who is facing yet another upcoming fight against cancer. Kim went through her first battle with cancer (breast cancer) without sharing her journey publicly on social media. With her permission, I'm sharing her story and this GoFundMe in hopes that we can help make this next journey a little easier for her and her family.
Kim's story started in February of 2024 with a routine mammogram that showed an area that required further diagnostic testing. During February through the end of March she had multiple tests completed, diagnostic mammograms, biopsy's, genetic testing, MRI's, etc. resulting in her receiving a diagnosis of bilateral breast cancer. Left side stage 3 invasive ductal carcinoma HER2- / Right side stage 1 invasive ductal carcinoma HER2-.
In April 2024 Kim underwent a double mastectomy, and also having 3 lymph nodes taken from the left side. During this procedure, tissue expanders were placed for reconstructive surgery after treatment.
In May 2024 Kim had another surgery to have an additional 8 more lymph nodes removed.
June - beginning of July 2024 - Weekly trips to Pittsburgh for expander maintenance.
August - September 2024 Kim began radiation 5 times a week for 5 weeks. Radiation started out fine, she still had energy and no notable negative reactions. Towards the middle week of her radiation treatment she began to have some issues with pain, burns on her neck, underarm and left chest. As radiation continued these issues intensified, and it was becomingly increasingly difficult to manage. During her last few treatments someone on her care team had told her "it may get worse before it gets better" when referring to the burns - and unfortunately they were right. She completed her last treatment, and was monitoring the left side of her chest as that burn was more involved. Through the next week or so the burn continued to get worse, and more painful - despite being done with radiation treatment. In October she had to return to Magee to have the left side tissue expander removed as the device became exposed as the burn continued to worsen. Kim managed to work full time throughout her entire radiation treatment - as the treatment wore on, you could see it taking more and more out of her, but she still showed up.
At this point things quieted down for Kim - she attended her follow up appointments, began the medication portion of her continued cancer treatment and just took some time to catch her breath. Although during this time, it felt more like catch up financially from the whirlwind the past several months - which was it's own set of struggles, but at least she was "on the other side".
August 2025 Kim's plan of care was at a point where she could move forward with reconstructive surgery. She met with the surgeon, they scheduled the surgery for the beginning of September 2025 - to allow for pre-op testing to be completed, of which a CT scan was part of that.
At the beginning of September Kim received her CT scan results showing a 7.5cm mass on the right lobe of her liver, requiring a biopsy. Kim received her biopsy results confirming that her breast cancer metastasized to her liver.
In the blink of an eye, her treatment plan went from reconstructive surgery and closing this chapter of her life - to facing another devastating diagnosis. Kim is scheduled to have the right lobe of her liver removed in November in hopes of removing the tumor entirely. After removal, her treatment plan likely involves chemotherapy - but her care team can't be certain until the removal is completed.
It's heartbreaking to see someone carry so much the past year and a half. Life is hard enough on us all right now - add that to navigating through two cancer diagnoses in less than 2 years - and it's enough to absolutely break someones spirit. But Kim has managed to pull herself up, continue to be the doting mother that she is along with support and love her family and friends. She said something to me the other day, that allowed me to feel the depths of her worry for a minute - she said that she just didn't want to let her son without a mother. - As a mother to a son myself, that broke me and I want nothing more than to TRY to ease her burden however possible.
I understand life is absolutely hard for so many of us right now - but if you could please consider donating or sharing this to help someone who is so so deserving of some community support.
More importantly - if you can, please take a moment and pray for strength and healing for Kim on the road ahead of her.
Thank you so much.
