I am writing this on behalf of my cousins, Kim and Cory Neumeyer, who are facing an overwhelming and unexpected hardship. Kimberly is currently in remission from cancer, and this fire has added an unimaginable layer of stress during a time when she should be focusing on healing and rebuilding her strength.

On Monday, April 13th, a fire broke out at their home and caused major damage to the garage, attic, and their trailer. While the flames didn’t reach the main living areas, the smoke spread throughout the entire house, leaving nearly everything inside damaged or unsafe to use. What wasn’t burned has been heavily affected by smoke and soot. Kim and Cory are incredibly grateful that everyone is safe, but the financial impact has been devastating. They did not have renters insurance, which means none of their personal belongings, the trailer, or the items lost in the garage and attic are covered. One of the hardest losses was their new granddaughter’s bedroom—including her crib, swing, bedding, and playpen, all of which were ruined by smoke damage.

They are now responsible for replacing clothing, furniture, and personal items damaged by smoke, items stored in the garage and attic that were destroyed, the trailer, which was a total loss, their new granddaughter’s bedroom and essentials, cleaning, restoration, and temporary living needs, and basic necessities while they work to rebuild. This has been a heartbreaking and unexpected setback, especially with Kimberly’s ongoing recovery.
