Help Kim Dixon Buy a Car

Hi! I'm Kim. I'm a local TV lifestyle reporter, actor, voice-over artist, and a makeup artist. Basically I'm a project freelancer.

On May 4 of this year (Star Wars Day), my 1999 Ford Explorer and I ended our long-term relationship on New Circle Road in Lexington, KY. There was an enormous cloud of smoke, fluids pouring out of the engine, and I had to call a fire truck before the tow truck would come out! My mechanic told me that the Explorer was no longer safe or worth repairing.

May was a difficult month. Losing transportation came at a really inconvenient time. Days after the Explorer died, my shows Let’s Talk, Kentucky and “Out There with Kim” were cancelled, so I lost a consistent part of my income with the TV station. (I do still work there on a limited as-needed basis.)

My mechanic was able to find a 2011 Nissan Altima and gave me a great deal. The car is fantastic with a new engine and a new transmission, but it still needs some work.

My husband has been working a lot of extra hours to support us, and I’m working a part-time job at the University of Kentucky as well as freelance work; but an unexpected, new-to-me car has been overwhelming for us.

Here’s a rough financial breakdown of costs that will make my car safe and dependable:

2600 Balance on the 2011 Nissan Altima

800 Brakes (all around, rotors and pads - lifetime warranty on pads)

450 Approx registration, taxes, and fees

300 Interior car detailing (previous owner was a heavy smoker)

250 Two months of insurance

200 Replacement side mirrors

175 Estimated GoFundMe fees

150 Spare tire & jack

50 Floor mats

25 Gas cap

Any funds that go over my goal will be applied to things that have been neglected (due to making car payments) like rent, bills, and essentials, or underestimates of the items above.
