Kilo Yukon Cornelius is our three-year-old mini labradoodle, and he has always been a healthy, happy little dog. Just a few days ago, everything changed. On New Year's Day, we noticed Kilo was unusually tired and not his playful self. By Friday, he was becoming more lethargic, and we knew something was seriously wrong. We rushed him to the emergency hospital, where they performed x-rays and lab work. That's when we received the devastating news: Kilo has Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia (IMHA), a life-threatening autoimmune disease with no cure.
On Saturday, Kilo was admitted to the emergency hospital for a much-needed blood transfusion, ultrasound, and more bloodwork. We are still waiting on additional test results to see if there is an underlying cause, such as a tick-borne illness. Kilo is now on several medications and immunosuppressants, which he will need for life. To keep him stable, we must monitor his red blood cell levels weekly. While there is no cure for IMHA, with ongoing treatment, Kilo can go into remission and continue to be the loving companion we cherish.
We are heartbroken by this diagnosis and overwhelmed by the cost of Kilo's care. We do not have pet insurance, and the expenses for medications, frequent lab work, and transfusions are mounting quickly. Kilo is like our child, and we are doing everything we can to save him. We are asking for help from our community to give Kilo the best chance at recovery. Any support, no matter how small, would mean the world to us and help us keep our beloved boy by our side.
