Help Kieran Recover from Severe Spinal Condition

Donation protected
Help Kieran Recover from Life-changing Spinal Condition as a Result of Undiagnosed Sepsis.

In early September 2020, Kieran had been trying to get an appointment with his doctor due to extreme back pain but with the restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he wasn’t treated as an emergency patient. He was prescribed medication over the phone. Days later he insisted on seeing a doctor as the pain was getting worse. After visiting his doctor, he was then prescribed more medication.

On September 9th Kieran was rushed to hospital by ambulance after being found unresponsive in bed. He had gone into septic shock. After a few days in the hospital, doctors discovered the sepsis had stemmed from a horsefly bite. Kieran spent 6 weeks in the ICU Ward of CUH, 3 of which he was on a ventilator. After the 6 weeks and 9 surgeries, Kieran was moved to the Trauma Ward in CUH where he stayed till February.

Kieran was then transferred to Dun Laoghaire Rehabilitation Hospital in Dublin where he stayed for 5 months. When leaving Cork for Dublin, Kieran still had little or no use of his arms and legs. Kieran regained a lot of upper body strength during his time in the NRH but was yet to regain movement in his legs.

Kieran is now back in Dun Laoghaire since the beginning of October where they hope to give him another chance at recovering. The severity of the sepsis has left Kieran in a wheelchair with no mobility in his right leg, little movement in his left and no muscle working in his glutes. They hope for Kieran to be able to walk short distances, with the aid of a frame upon leaving the NRH this time around. However, he will always need to use a wheelchair.

Under the public system, Kieran would see a physiotherapist once every 2 weeks when he returned to Cork from the NRH. Due to this Kieran began training privately in an aim to continue his recovery. During his time back in Cork during this summer Kieran spent 3-4 mornings a week in Elite Fitness Gym. Working with Colin O’ Shaughnesy, Kieran has come on a long way over summer months but still has a long way to go.

Adjusting to his new way of living the costs incurred are significantly high.

Below are some immediate costs Kieran will incur:

  • An adapted car.

  • Weekly gym sessions and Aqua rehabilitation.

  • A powered wheelchair (Kieran was lucky enough to have one lent to him for the summer months by friends in MMS Medical).

  • A standing frame and exercise equipment.

  • Adaptations to his living space.

  • Monthly medical expenses, not covered publicly.

A percentage of proceeds raised from this fund will also be donated to the ICU Department of CUH and also to The National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dun Laoghaire. This donation will be to thank both hospitals and staff for their care and support to both Kieran and his family over the last 14 months.

The aim of this fund is to give Kieran the best possible chance at recovering. All support is greatly appreciated.
