My name is Tasha and I'm looking for help to raise funds for my son Kieran's intense facial reconstructive surgery. Kieran just turned 8 and goes to school at Vale in Cashmere. I recently found out he has a severe tongue thrust to the point where his tongue is sucking back into his throat, giving him a very unsafe airway at night. He was just diagnosed with severe sleep apnea to the point he stops breathing more than 15 times in an hour, and sometimes his brain doesn't even process he's not breathing. He will start using a CPAP machine soon as it's the first step as we are concerned about the lack of oxygen he is actually receiving within a night.
He needs physical therapy which would be out of pocket since insurance doesn't cover it, which is $1,200. He needs an expander as soon as possible, which is $2,400. That will widen his palate before he is to have his jaw broken to extend his jaw forward for a safer bite and swallow. He also has an adult-sized tongue and will need soft palate surgery, but that can take a year just to get in for a consult.
He has appointments between Wenatchee, Moses Lake, and Seattle, but as most everyone knows, dental work isn't covered. I can't push it out any longer as after 9, they don't like doing jaw surgeries.
Kieran is seriously the sweetest, most kind-hearted boy ever. He has such a big heart to give to the world, and he helps so much with caring for his younger sister with medical needs. His attention span in school can be very short. He is smart, but he can't sit still at all and is extremely emotional due to him basically fighting for life while he sleeps, so he's running off fumes all day and in return has a lot of night terrors.
His teeth are pushing out, and he will need braces at one point as well, but we need to expand his palate and rebuild his tongue muscles so he can start to talk properly. He has an overbite, and his teeth are barely touching, so even eating food can be hard for him. He has speech therapy and needs a tablet with a system to communicate with the words he can't say or you can't understand since his tongue doesn't work right to pronounce words.
I ask for help because with all these issues he has, it has severely impacted his confidence and his social life in school and at home. He struggles to communicate with teachers and peers. He spent the first few years of school hiding in the locker or under a desk because nobody could understand a word he said. He gets made fun of for his speech, and when he tries to talk to someone new, nobody can understand what is said. Myself or his oldest brother has to help translate to others, and at times it makes him cry because he doesn't understand why nobody understands him. His mouth being fixed would give him so much confidence and help him communicate with others and hopefully make as many friends as everyone else has.
Thank you so much for reading my story and thanks to all who are able to help and share. Stay blessed.
