Help Support My Son Through Kidney Failure Treatment and His Return Home.

My 29-year-old son is facing a life-changing medical battle after being diagnosed with advanced kidney disease, with his kidneys now deteriorating to the point where dialysis treatment is urgently needed.

Before all of this, he made the incredibly brave decision to travel to Australia on his own to try to build a new life and future for himself. As someone with autism, this was a huge step and showed real courage, independence, and determination.

His health crisis began after he attended an emergency department in Australia with a severe headache that would not go away, initially believing it may be linked to ongoing eyesight difficulties. Following medical investigations, he was diagnosed with serious kidney disease, changing his life overnight.

He has worked hard to build a life in Australia and does not want to leave, but due to the seriousness of his condition and the need for ongoing treatment, he now has no choice but to return to the UK.

He is not delaying his return by choice. Due to the seriousness of his condition, travelling on a long-haul flight without treatment in place could pose significant risks to his health. His recent blood test results have shown further decline in his kidney function, and his medical team in Australia are now reviewing the need for urgent surgery and the start of dialysis treatment. He has another hospital review in three weeks’ time. Once medically safe to travel, he will need to return to the UK for ongoing care, dialysis support, and transplant planning.

He is due to begin Peritoneal Dialysis (PD), which first requires surgery to place a permanent catheter into his abdomen. Part of this tube remains outside of his body, allowing him to connect dialysis fluid for treatment each day. The fluid is then drained externally and replaced during each exchange. He will need to carry out this process multiple times a day, every day, to do the work his kidneys can no longer manage.

This is an enormous adjustment for anyone, especially for a young man trying to rebuild his life and future. Dialysis is not simply treatment — it affects daily routine, work opportunities, independence, energy levels, and emotional wellbeing.

He has also been advised that a kidney transplant is the best long-term treatment option, and his mother is currently going through the process to see if she may be a suitable living donor match.

There is also urgent time pressure. His Australian working holiday visa is due to end in June this year.

Returning home is far from straightforward. Due to recent international travel disruption, some flight routes have changed and travel costs have increased. He will require suitable flights, ideally with medical assistance and as little stress as possible during travel.

As he will be living in Birmingham, and many return flights arrive into London, onward private transport may also be needed, as managing multiple train changes, luggage, and dialysis equipment after treatment would be extremely difficult.

We are also trying to secure suitable temporary accommodation for him on his return, as his mother is currently in a one-bedroom flat and looking to move to a two-bedroom property so she can properly support him during this critical time.

These combined medical, travel, and housing pressures have created significant financial strain.

Funds raised would go towards urgent travel costs, accommodation support, transport to appointments, recovery needs, and helping him adjust safely to dialysis without the immediate pressure of financial hardship.

Our hope is to give him the best possible chance to stabilise, regain independence, and focus on his health while moving through the next stages of treatment.
