Help Kien With His Surgeries

Donation protected
Greetings,

My name is Duong and I would like to ask for your help. My little brother Kien was born in 2005 in the small province of Nghe An, Vietnam. During his birth, Kien's oxygen was cut off for a short time and resulted in him having epilepsy. He spent the first couple years of his life in a hospital in Hanoi, Vietnam. Since then he has had to endure many medical issues including a spinal deformity and a heart that did not develop properly. My little brother is currently 15 years old and needs several surgeries before he is 18, or it may be too late to perform the medical procedures he needs to have a normal healthy life. Please allow me to share my family's story with you.

When Kien started to mature we all noticed he was not developing like his peers. Over time his spine became curved and he was unable to develop like the other boys in my village. This causes him a lot of physical pain on a daily basis. My family spent their entire savings for his medical bills when he was born and as a result we were unable to get him the surgery for his back that was needed.

In my family we have 5 people, my mother is a farmer and makes 20 USD/month and my father is retired and receives 150 USD/month.  In 2016 Kien fainted in the front yard and my mother rushed home from the rice fields and took him to the hospital. The doctors diagnosed him with WPW (Wolff-Parkinson-White), a condition in which there is an extra electrical pathway to the heart. This can cause rapid heart rate problems, heart failure and even death. His doctor told us he needed heart surgery ASAP and two months later he received that surgery.  Unfortunately, the surgery was not successful and he was sent home to heal.

As of recent, his doctor informed us that this kind of surgery will cost around 20-30,000 USD or more (50,000 - 60,000USD for all medical procedures). The surgeon recommended we do this procedure overseas because it's a very complicated surgery and his heart can fail at any time. Because of the high cost of this surgery we simply do not have the money for his health-care. Any money that we have saved has been spent on other medical issues for Kien like his most recent dental work. Because the village dentist did a poor job and of his weak teeth they will have to replace four teeth, along with other dental work that will cost around 1,500 USD.

From the bottom of my heart, I am asking you to help my brother so he can have a normal life. Since I was little I have raised my brother and we have always been so close. My mother was always working in the fields and my father was working overseas. 100 percent of donations will be spent firstly on his spinal surgery, heart surgery and then dental work. Thank you so very much for taking the time to read my story and I appreciate any help you can offer. We will be posting more information on our Caring Bridge site.
