Help Kiara Walk Again!

Hi All! My name is Kiara Bowen since July 2021 I have been recovering from the aftermath of COVID-19 which caused my immune system to become compromised.

My recovery story was not shared amongst most but after having Covid my fingertips & toes became numb & cold. My vision became blurred, I had severe headaches, dizziness, and loss of memory. I found myself randomly falling, due to loss of balance/equilibrium. I loss all sensory motor to my feet (brain doesn’t communicate with feet) which caused me to be immobile. All of my muscles in my lower extremity’s had zero function. My entire body went to “sleep” and numb causing the onset of paralysis. There was difficulty finding relief from local hospitals, and I began to lose hope after being sent home. I was 29 years old, no previous health issues/concerns.

Fast forward to October 2021, I spent 18 Days in Duke University Hospital. I was diagnosed with Chronic inflammatory Deminalyting Polyneuropathy (CIDP) which is a rare autoimmune disorder. Having an autoimmune disorder, my body attacks the good thriving tissues mistaking it for “bad” tissues. In CIDP, the body attacks the myelin sheaths. These are the fatty coverings on the fibers that insulate and protect the nerves. Although there it’s no cure, it can be treated.

The neurology team immediately started me on a treatment called IVIG that I now receive every 3weeks at Duke University Infusion Center. IVIG protects my immune system, while trying to regenerate nerves and healthy cells. With assistance from a walker and a wheelchair I have began to walk again. I am building strength daily, while fighting the fatigue. CIDP cause numbness and loss of feeling of the soles of my feet.

Unfortunately, my insurance will only cover up to 6 months of the treatment plan (because of the expensive cost) leaving the next 6months dose to be out of pocket.

I’m not ashamed to ask for help. I’m just trying to continue to live and fight each and everyday. So with that being said I’m graciously asking for your help/assistance for treatment cost. No matter the amount, I’m grateful for all donations.
