For those who don’t know me, my name is Khayyiel Smith and I am a senior Biology major, Chemistry and Arabic double minor at Howard University who has had aspirations of pursuing a career in medicine since I was 9. I am currently in school to become a Neurosurgeon. This is a dream I often shared with my younger brother, not only talking about being better but showing him better. Showing him that anything is possible if you put your mind to it and remain focused and that anyone can do anything, including him. All I’ve ever wanted to be was a role model for my brothers. But, this past year has been….incredibly hard, to say the least. In the beginning of 2021, my baby brother Kevin was murdered, sending my world into a crazy spiral. There’s no pain like losing your best friend and your sibling. In the midst of my grief, I continued to finish school and try to keep my head above water. It was very hard but I finished the semester in good standing Alhamdulillah. The next semester came (this past fall) and wasn’t as easy. My mental health wasn’t in the best condition due to my grief and after being diagnosed with multiple emotional conditions, I sought counseling in an attempt to keep my head on straight for school and tough it out. My family moved across the country, ushering me to make sure I could support myself as well while we adjusted to life and it’s adversities. While trying my hardest to remain calm and sane, I have reached some obstacles. I was unaware scholarships had been taken away and holds had been placed in their position. This was a blow to me as I have been hyper focused on trying to bring my family some happiness while we grieve and now it seems as if we have more obstacles in our way. For those who know me, it’s clear that I am a hard working student who has been through so much and is in need of a small break. For those who don’t, believe that God has blessed me with amazing friends and family so I have faith I will continue my journey and reach the end but I truly need your help.
The amount listed is the amount of my fall balance at Howard that needs to be cleared so that I can register for my final semester at Howard and move toward graduation. Anything helps, even prayer and well wishes, as I continue to fight this fight.
