Help Khalil & Family get to US from Afghanistan
Members of the FBI National Academy Class 237 are seeking your urgent help!
The FBI National Academy is a 10-week law enforcement leadership course held at the FBI Academy in Quantico, VA. Students from law enforcement leadership positions from across the country, as well as the world, are vetted and selected to attend this training.
One of our classmates, Khalil, is from Afghanistan. At one point, he and other classmates, were sitting in an outdoor café of a Mexican restaurant in Virginia. We knew that he had the ability to relocate his family to the US, but had turned it down. We were a little surprised and asked him why. He answered that it was his hope that one day people could sit outside in an outdoor café in Afghanistan with as little worry as we had there in Virginia, and that he wanted to be part of working towards that. That was 2009.
With the recent collapse of the Afghan government, our friend and classmate, serving as a diplomat for Afghanistan in a nearby country, suddenly became trapped. Thankfully, Khalil and his family are now out of the country and out of reach of the Taliban. That means, however, that none of them have a country of their own any longer.
While many partners are working to get Khalil and his family to the US, not only is there significant cost involved, they will be arriving with what they can carry with them. The resource needs they will face will be extensive.
Obviously he and his family are in a very difficult situation without resources in the United States, and this is one of the factors the State Department considers in an application. We have been able to secure him temporary housing in the United States and we are working on employment to aid in his transition to our country with his family.
If you could spare anything, even as little as the cost a venti cup of coffee at Starbucks, together with other donations it will go a long way to get him and his family settled in their new home. Money raised will be held in the United States until he is relocated here, and will be used to reimburse for expenses (travel, clothing, food) and provide for his family in the US.
