Khalifa is a 19-year-old from Arusha, Tanzania. He lives in a home built with hardened mud and rusted metal sheets. There’s no floor, just bare earth. The front door is a loose panel that doesn’t lock. His bed is a piece of decaying foam.

There’s no kitchen. Meals are prepared on the ground in a small garden, using contaminated water from the only tap. The outdoor toilet is in terrible condition. Hygiene is a daily struggle.

Life in this home is dangerous. Thieves can enter at night. Venomous snakes, including black mambas, and anacondas crawl inside. During the rainy season, floods can sweep away homes like his, and sometimes, the people inside.

Khalifa lives here with his mother, his three siblings, and his 12-year-old sister. Their mother works long hours selling vegetables around the city, earning at most $2 a day. Their father, once a bricklayer, died suddenly in 2014. Since then, Khalifa has carried the weight of responsibility on his shoulders.

Thanks to an English sponsor, Khalifa was able to finish school. The sponsor even built a small, safe room for him and his brother to sleep in. But after the COVID-19 pandemic, that sponsor passed away, leaving Khalifa on his own once again.

Khalifa is the only one in his family to receive an education. He dreams of going to university, finding stable work, and giving his mother and siblings a better life. Right now, he works 12 hours a day in electronics shops, often earning nothing, and at most $2 on a good day.

Despite everything, Khalifa holds onto hope: to go to college, build his own electronics store, and one day buy his mother a real home.

University tuition for three years costs just $1,200, not including food or lodging (if you include them, Khalifa needs $7.500). Today, Khalifa has only $4 in savings.
