Help Kevin handle unexpected expenses

Donation protected
Hello all,

Im seeking help to pay for some very unexpected expenses due to my catalytic converter being stolen.

It’s been very hard for me to ask for help, being a minority i’ve been conditioned to be strong, stay strong, and to keep my head down. It’s a difficult thing to get over but, i’ve learned that vulnerability is strong.

So, on Thursday, February 3 I came to find that someone had stolen the catalytic converter and oxygen sensor from the car that me and my partner both rely on for both of our jobs. This all happened at a very remote trailhead about 90 miles from Asheville. After driving about 10 miles to find reception to call our insurance company, the car cut out and it would not start again.

The insurance is not paying for all of the repairs that our car needs, saying they found no link between the theft and the car being unable to start. I find it very hard to believe, and it's an astronomical expense that I have no way of affording. Calling this a coincidence is ridiculous.

This is a shared car between me and my partner who both need to get to our jobs. And the insurance provided rental is going to end when the car is done. So there is some urgency in this, being that the repairs may be done mid next week.

Anyway, to those who don't know much about me, my name is Kevin and I am a first-generation immigrant to this country. I have been here since 2012, I went to college here and started my adult life in a very new place.

I have always been an entry-level worker since before college. I went to school in Chicago to do Multimedia Photojournalism. It worked for a while, I was getting some jobs here and there but it never really outweighed my income from gig work and just hustling. I was working at a music venue bar for much of 2017-2019 and at the end of that year I started an office job. It went well up until July 2020 when there was a round of layoffs, and I was one of the unfortunate people. I struggled to keep afloat throughout that time but staying on unemployment was unsustainable. The pandemic had taken away my backup options, I could not work in the industry that I had experience in.

I then moved to Asheville with my partner February of last year. I eventually got a job that lasted about two weeks, and then I was let go of that too. Scrambling and trying to find work took a toll on myself, my relationship, and my morale. I am employed now and have been since October. I work as a dishwasher at a wine place you probably are familiar with.

All that being said, it has been very difficult to stay ahead of it all with rent, groceries, student loan debt, credit card debt, and just everyday survival needs. I've had to pause my student loans with every plan I could get since the pandemic started and now my monthly bill is $394. Which is absolutely ridiculous.

So, I ask, if you have anything to spare and could help in any way – I would be very much appreciative of you, and please if you can stay anonymous please do. I am already so grateful for all of you, and all of you who have read up to here so far.

Love,

Kevin
