Help Kevin Quinn: Insurance Canceled After Cancer Diagnosis

Donation protected
On August 19, 2024, our friend, Kevin “Rapper” Quinn, was diagnosed with stage four renal cell carcinoma. He spent ten days in the hospital where he underwent major back surgery to repair damage caused by one of the tumors pushing into his spine, as well as to alleviate pressure caused by the tumor wrapping a major nerve leading to his leg. The surgery reduced further damage to the nerves and bone, but the surgeon could not remove some of the larger tumors due to their location.

Since then, Kevin has completed a two-week daily radiation treatment. He continues taking daily chemotherapy pills and has immunotherapy sessions every three weeks. He is responding well to the treatment, although the long-term prognosis remains uncertain.

During Kevin’s initial cancer treatment, his insurance company found a loophole in coverage and retroactively canceled his policy, leaving him responsible for the cost of his hospital stay, back surgery, radiation doses, and immunotherapy treatments. Appeals to the insurance company and the NC Insurance Board were unsuccessful, and the lawyers they consulted advised that a lawsuit against the insurance company would be costly and likely unsuccessful.

After negotiating reductions from the hospital and other medical providers, Kevin and his wife Sandra are still left with nearly $200,000 in medical bills. Kevin is now on his wife’s insurance, which helps with current treatments, but adding him to her policy significantly reduces her take-home pay. Though Kevin is working as much as he can, the cancer treatment has forced him to decrease his workload, further reducing the household income.

I’ve known Kevin for more than 35 years, and he is one of the most caring, intelligent, and quick-witted people I have ever met. He is hardworking, family-oriented, generous, and ready to help anyone in need. The struggle he and Sandra are facing is tremendous, and the financial burden placed on them by their former insurance company should be criminal. Please help Kevin and Sandra with these overwhelming medical expenses and growing household debts. We need Kevin focusing on treatment and not worrying about finances.
