In 2022, Kevin was riding his bicycle and got hit by a pickup truck. He suffered major injuries, especially to his brain and his pelvis. He was in a coma for weeks and is still working to be able to move, speak, eat, and take care of himself again. He isn't able to completely control the left side of his body (sort of like a stroke), and as his brain recovers, he will be facing physical challenges from his fractures.

Kevin and Julia have been slowly adjusting to their new normal over the past three years. They moved to a more accessible house in Ithaca, have spent countless hours in rehab and at the Y with Julia's dad, and are finding new things to enjoy - a kitten, spending time with kids in the family, and learning music with Julia's aunt.

However, finances continue to be a challenge. Health insurance does not cover long term care, which includes things like home health aides. Medicaid would cover long term care, but would also garnish most of Kevin and Julia's assets. The family has come together to hire an aide for a few hours a week, but more coverage will likely be needed. In addition, to be able to get to his appointments and visit family safely, Kevin needs access to a wheelchair van. New wheelchair vans cost between $80 and $90k.
