I never thought I’d find myself in this position again, but here I am. Over the past year, I worked hard to improve my health and finances, and things were finally looking up. That all changed on October 9th, when another driver ran a red light and totaled my car. The impact was severe—every airbag deployed, I broke four ribs, and my nose was shattered. While I try to find the good in every situation, the aftermath has been a mix of blessings and challenges. The other driver’s insurance is covering some costs, and I’m waiting on a settlement once I finish therapy. However, there have been complications with the city’s handling of the accident, and the process has been slow and stressful.

The hardest part has been managing without a car. Even though insurance paid off most of the car, we’re still making payments on a vehicle we haven’t had for months, and my partner now has a much longer commute. Uber prices have gone up, and wait times are long, making it feel like we’re living far from the city. My insurance used to cover unlimited rides to medical appointments, but as of January 1st, that’s been cut back drastically. Now, I can only get rides to two appointments a week, and insurance has started denying some of my medical needs. This is especially hard because I recently learned I’m in liver failure, which means I need frequent testing and care.
