Help Kevin fight Bone Cancer! (Osteosarcoma)

Donation protected

Hi! My name is Melissa, and I am Kevin's mom. This is our story...

December 2, 2021 was the day that changed our lives. My then 14-year-old son Kevin,
and I woke up in the Oncology unit at SickKids Hospital in Toronto, after being rushed
by ambulance from our local hospital in Barrie, Ontario (RVH) the night before.
We spent 16 days there, undergoing many tests, CT scans, x-rays, MRI's and biopsies.
Chemotherapy was started almost immediately after our arrival.
Then, a diagnosis of Stage 3 Osteosarcoma on the right side of his pelvis- the same
cancer that claimed Terry Fox. It blew us away.

Chemotherapy (specifically the MAP protocol) made Kevin feel terrible
(understatement). He lost his hair and was sick to his stomach constantly. The constant
flushing out his system was tiring and painful as if forced him to keep moving his sore
bones. Finally, after completing 2 cycles of chemotherapy, we were told that surgery
would take place. Nearing the end of January, we sat in a small room with the surgeon,
doctors, social workers, and nurses to discuss the upcoming surgery. Instead, we were
told that the life-saving surgery we so desperately needed would not happen, as it was
too complicated and risky and would destroy his quality of life. Therefore, continuing
chemotherapy would be useless. I quickly followed the doctor into the hall and asked
what this meant. "Just make sure he enjoys his summer." she told me while we both
stood there holding hands with tears in our eyes. Now he was considered terminal.

Radiation was suddenly an option, even though we were previously told it would not
help. So about a week later, Kevin started 35 High Dose radiation treatments at
Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto.

We were very lucky to be given a 1-bedroom apartment a short distance away to stay at
during this time. One freezing night in February, we took a short walk to pick up supper.
Kevin was quite concerned with how many hungry and cold people were sleeping on
the streets, so he went into a convenience store and bought some hot chocolates and
as many bags of Doritos as we could carry. He bravely handed them out. Even in his
dire situation, he put others first.
He completed radiation, hopeful that this would cure him. Kevin didn't even complain
much about the horrific radiation burn left on his body, ongoing infections that would not
heal due to a low immune system or the daily hospital visits. However, he did complain
that he missed his family and friends terribly, especially his little brother Jordan. Finally,
March 25, 2022, he got to smash the gong! Treatment was over!

Kevin finally got back into a routine after healing from radiation. Just before his
diagnosis, he started high school, and enrolled in a few more courses. Kevin is an
excellent musician and loves producing songs with different people. He is a regular
volunteer at Connexus Church, where we attend, and a huge asset to the production
team there. Pre-Covid, Kevin kickboxed weekly. He made friends everywhere he went,
and everyone loved to see him.

Recently he was faced with the most significant decision of his life - What to do now?!
SickKids suggested finishing the chemotherapy, only to prolong his life. Not to heal him.
Clinical trials are available but with the same gruesome side effects and extended
hospital stays. Kevin wants healing, or a cure. At the very least, he wants a higher
quality of life for his remaining time on earth.

We have been thoroughly researching and investigating natural remedies and have
concluded that this is the next path of his cancer journey. We have started a cocktail of
supplements and IV therapy treatments with a local Naturopathic Doctor, even though
we have no extended benefits or extra money, since I cannot work anymore.

Having a child with terminal cancer is a 24-hour-a-day job. This is something we NEED
to try. We NEED to do everything remotely possible to keep Kevin here. Kevin is an
incredible young man, and he is my boy. He is quite literally just a child. He can’t drive
a car yet; he can’t purchase a lottery ticket even. Kevin loves hanging out with his little
brother, (who adores him), and with his friends. No parent should ever have to be in
this club; its terrible! No child should face Cancer and all the treatments, poking,
scanning, sick days, excruciating pain days, and the parfait of medication, and not so
good news from Doctor’s.

I have never asked for help up until this point. I cannot lose my sweet Kevin just
because I can't afford treatments. The cost of living is extraordinary, but the extra
expense of cancer treatments that are not covered is really putting a burden on us. We
are asking for donations to cover his medical treatments because this world is just so
much better with this handsome, caring, and loving 15-year-old boy in it. Thank you all
from the bottom of my heart!

Added from a friend:
Kevin and my daughter have been friends for four years. They went to elementary
school together. My daughter suffered severe bullying from other girls at school. Not
for any reason, just because that’s what sadly happens nowadays. Kevin was my
daughter’s life saver! Kevin made my daughter feel that she had a friend. He made her
feel that someone had her back. Kevin stuck up for my daughter because that’s what
kind of boy Kevin is. Kevin is giving, loving, kind, so kind, adventurous, smart, talented,
and a positive person. We have recently spent time with Kevin and Melissa, to find out
that they are both truly the kindest people you could know. They are selfless, positive,
kind, genuine people. Kev deserves for his good in the world to come back as good
karma now. Hes amazing! Let’s help them get the treatments that may make a
difference!! You’d do everything and anything if it was your child, right?? Please, help
Kevin and Melissa!!
