Hi! My name is John, and I am hoping to raise $22,000 for medical and other expenses for my Brother in Law Kevin Hoekman, who is currently hospitalized with Stevens-Johnson Syndrome. A rare skin condition caused by his body reacting to antibiotics given to him for a foot injury. The rash is so severe, both externally as well as internally, the hospital is treating him in the burn/trauma unit.
Kevin is self-employed, so there is no income while he is layed up, as well as mounting medical bills. The road to recovery will be long - weeks to possibly months in the hospital, with very real risks along the way.
Any amount of money gifted is greatly appreciated. If you are not in a position financially to give, then all we ask from you are your prayers for a speedy recovery. Thank you, and God Bless! Please share this with all your prayer warriors.
Below are actual text conversations from this past week (edited for length) between myself, other family members, and Kevin's wife, Judy Hoekman (my sister). I feel it's the best way to describe the situation. This began on Friday 8/15/25.
(Judy) He has Stevens Johnson Syndrome. His rash will blister, and the skin will shed so they treat it like a burn. We're in Flint because there wasn't a bed closer to home for this type of treatment. Please pray.
- How extensive is the rash?
(Judy) All over.
(Judy) The rash has started to bubble and open so he has gauze on his chest and back and then a burn vest on that.
- Any update? Tell Kevin we are all praying for him. (And you.)
(Judy) He's worse this morning, his body has to go through this awful process to the end.
(Judy) He has a film over both eyes to protect them from the skin popping and peeling in that area. The only part of his body that is not covered in wrapping is his hands and feet. I've never seen anything like it. I have full confidence that he will get through it, though.
How much longer are they expecting Kevin to be in the hospital?
- Good question. I don't think they know yet.
The doctors have an ophthalmologist as they are very concerned about his eyesight in particular. It's the 3rd case these doctors have ever seen. So rare. 1 to 2 out of a million.
Pray that skin grafting will not have to happen.
Update as of 8/22 - Kevin has been intubated. He will be under sedation and administered anesthesia for the pain when they change his burn dressings which are covering 90% of his body. this is a 2-3 hour process. The doctors will then assess him, and determine if the condition has peaked yet.
