In May 2025, Ken Fitzpatrick was diagnosed with Stage III Anal Squamous Cell Carcinoma — a rare and aggressive cancer. Since then, his life has been filled with surgeries, hospital stays, radiation, chemotherapy, and constant pain.
Now, he is facing invasive, life-altering surgery. It is his only remaining option — and he needs our help.
Ken’s Journey
In May, Ken underwent surgery to transition to an ileostomy. Complications led to a three-week hospitalization.
In June, he began radiation and chemotherapy in St. John’s, completing 31 radiation treatments and four rounds of chemotherapy during a seven-week hospital stay. At first, there was hope.
But by September, the pain returned. In November, his tumour ruptured, resulting in another emergency hospitalization. Tests confirmed devastating news — the cancer had returned and was growing aggressively.
Just before Christmas, Ken received the call no one wants to hear: the tumour had re-established itself.
On January 30, 2026, he met with an oncology surgeon. Extensive surgery is now planned, likely involving multiple procedures to improve his quality of life.
On February 7, he was hospitalized again with infections, dehydration, dangerously low blood pressure, and extreme pain. He has lost significant weight and currently cannot walk.
Yet through it all, Ken continues to fight.
He is a warrior.
A Personal Note
I first met Ken through his partner — and my best friend — Carolyn, when I was home in Newfoundland spending time with my dad during his own cancer battle.
When Ken was diagnosed, Carolyn reached out to me because I had experienced cancer myself. She wanted him to have someone who understood the fear and weight of hearing that diagnosis.
Since then, I’ve stayed close to them throughout this journey. Ken is one of the most caring, thoughtful, and selfless people I’ve ever met. He has always shown up for others.
Now it’s our turn to show up for him.
Why We’re Asking for Help
Ken has been unable to work for over a year. The bills have not stopped — and medical and travel expenses continue to grow.
As friends, Kim and I are helping Carolyn raise $7,500 to help cover:
• Travel for surgery and treatments in St. John’s
• Medications and medical supplies
• Specialized dietary needs
• Basic living and household expenses during recovery
Right now, easing financial stress will allow Ken to focus on what matters most — surviving surgery and healing.
