Help Ken Access His Home Safely Again

Donation protected
Hello everyone, my name is Lisa and my husband is Ken.

In October 2024, Ken, who has muscular dystrophy, Parkinson's, and other debilitating diseases, fell when he was home alone. He was on the floor for 10.5 hours before I came home from work and found him there. That fall resulted in dehydration, pneumonia, and nearly cost him his life while he was in the hospital. Until then, he was able to walk, talk, and eat, but that fall ended up costing him 4-5 weeks in the hospital and many more weeks in rehab as they try to build up his strength so he can use a wheelchair and come home again.

For many weeks, we have dreamed about the moment when we can live together again.

We've had to make many changes to our home and routine so that he will be able to get around, including giving away furniture and rugs, buying medical and exercise equipment for his use, and basically rearranging our lives at home and work to allow him to survive at home. We will need to have in-home therapy and caregivers when I'm at work, which is all quite expensive, and we will gladly pay for that to be together again.

We have been proud people (probably to our detriment) and have worked hard and tried not to ask anyone for help in all of our decades together, but as I said to Ken, "We've been there for others whenever we could be and there's nothing to be ashamed about in telling our community that we need help."

The one thing that we desperately need and can't afford is to have an ADA-approved bathroom remodel so that he can drive his wheelchair right into the shower. To do that, we'll have to take out the bathtub that is shown. Ken can only walk a few feet with his walker, and our bathrooms are impossible for him to use. Because of his disabilities, the bath-to-shower remodel needs some expensive and very specific modifications, too. We aren't asking for help for the whole cost but anything at all would help.

Thank you for considering us.
