Our names are Mary Loomis and Rachelle Tokos. On June 19th, our friend Kelsey lost the last remaining member of her immediate family- her beloved brother Derek Greco. These last few years have been devastating to her- from the passing of her mother, father, both grandparents and now, Derek.
Derek and Kelsey shared a bond that anyone who spent time with them could
see. Growing up, Kelsey was Derek’s shadow following him around and admiring his passion for BMX. When Derek was 16 he was in a car accident that claimed the life of his best friend and put him in the ICU. Almost losing her bother as such a young age, Kelsey developed immense fear of losing her brother. The trauma of the accident and losing his best friend impacted him for decades, and it has pained Kelsey to see her brother struggle. And sadly this was just the first of many tragic losses the two would face together. These continued losses strengthened their bond and need to lean on one another during these crucial years. Kelsey’s desire was always for her brother to succeed and have that beautiful life she knew he deserved.
Instead of allowing these life events to pull her down, she has grown immensely. This includes almost 4 years of continuous sobriety and achieving her life-long dream of building a home on wheels she could use to travel and rock-climb in. She has also been a full-time student for 3 years maintaining the deans list while working 1 and sometimes 2 jobs.
Unfortunately, Kelsey suffered a severe break to her ankle while enjoying a day of climbing. This injury has forced her to return to New York for treatment. The imaging of her ankle not only showed a severe fracture, but also that she’s also suffering from osteochondritis, the erosion of her bone. Kelsey will require an extensive surgery that involves breaking her tibia, removing bone shards, fusing bone, and adding cadaver bone. With a lengthy 6-12 month post recovery time, it is crucial she finds an apartment while she recovers.
Despite these enormous tragedies in her short 30 years, Kelsey has always
shown up to love and support so many of us. But this time, it is Kelsey that needs us. Feeling broken with her strongest support system gone, let’s show Kelsey she is not alone. Being the only one left in the immediate family, Kelsey is now responsible for laying her brother to rest without a family to turn to. Please help by alleviating some of Kelsey‘s financial burdens while she’s unable to work, and allow her to grieve and heal, both physically and mentally. Donations will go towards bills, daily essentials, and funeral expenses.
Any amount is appreciated immensely.
