UPDATE:
Thankfully, Kelly’s HR representative has re-examined her status and has determined that, Kelly’s health benefits WILL extend to at least the start of the new school year in August.
At this time, we are now able to fundraise for a more specific goal of salary replacement + some incidentals, which should carry her through to August. As such, we have adjusted our target amount.
As for treatment and staging, unfortunately, at this time, the tumor is too large to be operable. However, Kelly has been staged at stage II and doctors are hopeful that radiation and chemotherapy will be able to shrink the primary tumor. We will continue to post updates here as we have them.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In mid-January 2022, Kelly was diagnosed with cervical cancer. While she is awaiting the complete results of her PET/CT scan to determine staging, we know that she will need to undergo surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. Her treatment will cause her to need to miss school from February through June, at minimum.

While she is awaiting the complete results and plan for treatment, she is looking at a long period of time to be off work. At our school, we use any accrued sick time, then we have access to the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) instead of state disability. FMLA only allows 12 weeks of half-pay. At the end of 12 weeks, we also lose health insurance and have to purchase it through Cobra.
Kelly is a single mom of three boys. She has been a part of the community at Granada Hills Charter since 2014. She began as an AHA tutor, and quickly developed a reputation throughout the math department as being professional and talented, to the point that we often already felt we had a second teacher in the room. The department was thrilled as she finished her bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and she was able to be hired as a full time teacher. She began working as a full time teacher in the Math Department in 2019. In December 2021, she became a homeowner for the first time.
Kelly is hopeful that she will be able to return to teaching in summer or fall. However, we know that with out of pocket medical costs, limited sick time paid, and supporting her family as a single mom, additional resources will be needed. We have created this GoFundMe to help provide these additional resources.
