Help Kelly Hicks -- Artist Seeks Commissions

My name is Kelly Hicks, and I am a visual artist painter in oils doing business out of San Diego. I am not famous, but I do have a small following and have customers overseas in countries like Brazil, Belgium, and Germany.

Over the last couple of years I have been climbing out of debt, though it has been a struggle. As it stands, I am behind on rent – two months behind as of July 1st – and in need of a few material things to improve my life. In order to set things right, I wish to generate a few commissions for my future well-being and keep a roof over my head. On paper I am “homeless”, but I stay with friends and pay them a decent price for a small space.

Sales are often difficult, and I have posted to GoFundMe before, which has helped. I am hoping to have one more campaign to improve things and have the capital to invest in local business to maintain self-sustainability whether I sell more artwork or not. 2 paintings’ worth of income would set things right for now, and I hope to sell 10 more in the near future so I can work in peace without money coming between myself and the people who are helping me with a place to stay.

Generally, I sell a standard size of 1 foot square for $650, which represents one week of minimum-wage income in the San Diego area at the time of this post. I am a firm believer in folks earning a living wage, so it does often make things difficult to sell when people so often try to exploit workers of any fashion. I am happy to work with customers by accepting installment payments, so even folks who are at an income level like myself can afford my artwork.

About My Work…

Generally, I am only trying to survive, so I tend to make paintings that are copies of photographs customers send me. It would be nice to get to a point where I can make more introspective work, but as it stands I simply consider myself a very good copyist. Most often, it’s images of loved ones and pets. I should point out that I am an ally of LGBTQ+, and have customers who are under that umbrella. I encourage any persons of color to inquire, as I am seeking the opportunity to have content outside of "white" imagery.
