Keith is an Amazon worker in North Carolina who needs financial support in order to take time off from his physically demanding job at one of Amazon’s warehouses. Because he is classified as a “seasonal worker” at Amazon, he is ineligible for paid medical leave benefits.
In the months leading up to his surgery, Keith had to work through intense back pain and life-threatening high blood pressure because he couldn’t afford to take time off. Now, Keith has just undergone an intense six-hour heart surgery and is recovering in a nursing home. Meanwhile, his wife Mildred, also an Amazon worker, is recovering from knee surgery.
Despite his medical situation and the physical demands of his job, Keith is feeling the pressure to return to work as quickly as possible to support his family. As he puts it, “I’ve always been a provider.” Amazon has done nothing to help Keith and his wife through this ordeal.
Going back to work too soon would put Keith’s health at risk. All too often, when Amazon workers have medical issues, they have trouble obtaining accommodations from Amazon that would allow them to return without compromising their recovery.
Keith is loved by his coworkers and union siblings. He deserves time off to recover from major heart surgery. Yet he can’t afford that time without the support of this community, because Amazon will not provide him paid time off, and Amazon’s low pay makes it nearly impossible for workers to save for leave on their own.
Please donate if you can. Every bit helps, and will aid Keith in his recovery.
