Hi, my name is Elisa (Eli) Alfonso, and my cat Zeke was recently diagnosed with diabetes. For those of you who know me, you know that Zeke is my world. His health started deteriorating in March 2021, at which point I spent my entire life savings to keep him alive and stable. He was stable up until Sunday, November 28th, 2021, when I spent the night with him in the hospital because he was suffering from Diabetic Ketoacidosis. I am in grad school, his vet bills for his hospital stay alone cost more than I make in a month, insulin is around $200/ month, syringes are $25/ month, every two weeks he needs another appointment to monitor his glucose which is another $200 at least every two weeks. I am overwhelmed with the financial and emotional burden, but I can't continue to put myself in severe debt. I would never be able to live with myself if I didn't do everything I could to get him treatment and help him live the longest, happiest life possible. This cat has gotten me through so, so, so much and I want to take care of him as best I can. He is my everything. When I have a panic attack, he crawls on my chest and purrs to calm me down. When he sees I am not doing OK, he curls up with me and comforts me. He has done this for others too. He has moved with me to three different states, even though he hates travel, he has been such a source of joy for those around him, and I can't bear to lose him.
