Help Keep Whatì’s Pets Safe During the Wildfire Evacuation

Donation protected
On August 29th 2025, the community of Whatì in the Tłı̨chǫ region of the Northwest Territories was forced to evacuate due to wildfires. Volunteers drove over 300 km through thick smoke to reach Whatì and transport the dogs out of the community to safety.
Now, about 50 pets from Whatì are being cared for in Yellowknife, with more expected to arrive as evacuees in the coming days. Dogs are currently being housed at Qimmiq Kennels, while cats are receiving shelter at the NWTSPCA.
While the pets are safe, their continued care brings big costs: boarding, food, vet care, transport, and basic supplies. The Tłı̨chǫ Animal Care Society is a volunteer-run nonprofit, and right now we are asking for donations to help cover these costs.
Families from Whatì are already under stress from being away from home, and we want to make sure their pets are cared for until they can all return safely to their community together.
We are also accepting donations of large dog kennels, dog food, and gift cards for Canadian Tire. Please contact Amanda at [email redacted] to arrange drop off.
Your support will help keep tails wagging and pets safe until they are back home again.
Masi cho (thank you very much) for anything you can give.
Every little bit truly helps.
