Help Keep Us Off the Streets-We’ve Come Too Far to Lose It
Hi guys, I'm Tera, a Portland native, and I have a very serious need for help & support. Please take time to read; I'm so grateful. Currently, I share a home with 6 other people. Prior to here, we were all homeless, struggling with mental health and addiction issues. We all have worked very hard to maintain our housing and sobriety this past year. A few of us have established employment, obtained positive support groups, made steps to start reconnecting with our families/loved ones, and one roommate is enrolled in college after 15 years. We have all accomplished so much that we couldn't do while being out on the streets. (Some info on how we got here) I was approached at my tent on 10/10/2023 by two men with a simple flyer saying, "Free housing, treatment for mental health issues & substance abuse, call now to see if you qualify!" One of the men asked me how would i like to live in my own house? I immediately said, "ya right, whats the catch?" They explained to me that if i wanted to make some life changes and get into housing, they were starting a program that offered housing in exchange for attending treatment classes. I'll tell you that I was more than ready to commit to whatever they asked for to FINALLY get housed while addressing my underlying conditions, It felt like it was finally my turn to be given some chances to succeed. I was thier first client, I was brought to a beautiful home, and given the paperwork containing a ROI for my insurance and the rules. There was curfew time set, doors locked/quiet time after 10pm, random UAs, and random room checks to name a few rules. I felt that was more than fair and couldn't explain how grateful I was! They asked me if i might of known anyone else who would be a good fit for the program, and i absolutely did! I found 5 roommates who more or less came from same situation as I did. (SORRY ITS A BIT LENGTHY, I WANT PEOPLE TO UNDERSTAND)
So our tratment sessions, individual & group, were done via Zoom. The Doctor (and. creator of the program) lived in Mexico the first half of year & now resides at his other home in Seattle. He is a very wise man with both street & book knowledge, he met with us 1 time a week with group then i personally did 2 individual sessions per week. Things honestly were so good, I tried to not get comfortable cuz unfortunately when things are good in my life, I always wonder when it'll end..anyways, (I'll wrap it up) 18 days ago the Doc informed 3 of us that the funding had all of a sudden been discontinued, the program is terminated and we had to move out by the 28th of September! See the Doctor decided to take FULL advantage of our insurance, got greedy and we all got screwed over bad! Not nearly enough time to figure out what to do. I'm just devastated; each of us have no other options at this time. There are waitlists and referrals, etc., that are some complications. Losing the foundation, the place you call home, is traumatic, and I don't know what to do. The program will not provide anything, and no type of help whatsoever is offered. I'm asking for help, financial so a motel room can be obtained so we don't have to go back to the streets. The income is limited, and we're doing what we can. Even a few more nights inside helps since we were supposed to be out yesterday! Any type of suggestions? Any help would be so greatly appreciated. We have come so far. Please have a good evening, and ANY advice, financial help, referrals, info is GREATLY NEEDED AND APPRECIATED. Thank you so much.
